Involvement and contribution to the community

We at Nachshon attribute great importance to contributing community action. Every week the participants carry out volunteering activity, either as part of the weekly contact with communities near Nachshon, or as part of one-time campaigns during the various tours throughout Israel.

Examples of long-term volunteering

Nachshon participants regularly accompany, mentor and guide underprivileged groups in the communities nearby, including children from the Ethiopian community and from disadvantaged families, Bedouin youth, children with special needs, elderly people, immigrants in absorption centers, Holocaust survivors, and more.

Every year, Nachshon participants are responsible for organizing and working as counselors in week-long day camps during the school vacation before Passover, in which dozens of underprivileged boys and girls participate free of charge.

As part of an active citizenship project, they show initiative and involvement with governmental and public bodies, with the aim of correcting deficiencies and changing standards in various fields. Among other things, over the years, Nachshon participants have influenced educator’s lessons in schools, access of people with disabilities to public institutions, interpreting into sign language in the media, and more.

Examples of contributing activities during tours and trips:

Running fun days at absorption centers

Volunteering in aid organizations for people in need

Activities in retirement homes and with Holocaust survivors

Agricultural volunteering

Activities with children and adults with special needs

The experience of planning and carrying out the various voluntary activities instills caring and social awareness in the participants and strengthens their confidence in their abilities, as individuals and as a group.

Contributing activities in emergency situations

All groups of the Nachshon program are at the heart of the tension and/or security activity, even more than that. Right in the center of the “Gaza Envelope,” in emergency situations we live under the burden of “Red Alert” and falling missiles.

We attribute great importance to contributing to the community and doing our best to lend a hand to the community in which we live, especially when they need us and we can give back a little. For this reason, during operations such as Pillar of Defense and Protective Edge and also during the 2023–24 Israel–Hamas war (Iron Swords), the participants, together with alumni from previous cohorts, all joined forces and volunteered, both as part of personal initiatives and in various frameworks throughout the country, in cooperation with the regional and municipal councils, as an expression of the desire to help the population, in which and near to whom we are located and operate also in normal times, especially when they need us and we can give back a little.
